The first step in working together is that you need to contact me. Once we do that, I will check my availability for your wedding date. If I am available, then we can proceed.
Once we confirm that I am available to perform your ceremony, we need to discuss what you are interested in. The services listed on my site give a brief overview of the most popular services couples request, but I tailor the services to fit your needs. We can talk over the phone, and I'll ask some questions to get to know you and what you are looking for. We'll discuss traditions to be incorporated, where the ceremony will take place, rehearsal requirements (on-site rehearsals ahead of time are rarely necessary). and the approximate length and detail of your ceremony. Once we have the basics, I can tell you what the fee will be for my services. This fee is inclusive of travel, rehearsals, and the amount of writing I need to do. There is no fee for this initial consultation, of course.
When you hire me to create and perform your ceremony, we usually meet to discuss your expectations in more detail. I will offer ideas and suggestions on things to include in the ceremony and sample wordings to get a feel for the mood and tone you wish to set. This can be done by phone if we cannot get together. For longer ceremonies, at least one in-person meeting is usually held, but if scheduling does not permit, don't panic. We can make it work over the phone and through email.
Following that meeting, I'll send you a draft of the ceremony, and you and your intended can look it over. This is your opportunity to make sure the ceremony is exactly what you want. You'll send it back to me with suggestions or areas you wish to change. Perhaps you may decide to elaborate on sections, or add in another section. As long as it does not substantially change the scope of what we agreed on (for example, if you originally wanted a five- to ten-minute ceremony, and you've now decided to make it half an hour), I'll revise the work at no additional charge.
Two weeks before the wedding (if you booked my services early enough, of course--this does not apply to last-minute weddings!), I'll send you the final script. You can provide copies of the readings to your readers to rehearse and use the script in creating your original wedding program.
When we rehearse the day before or the day of the ceremony (a run-through 30 minutes before guests arrive is usually sufficient), I'll take notes about what is supposed to happen, where people stand, and then make sure the wedding planner, Maitre d', musicians, dj, and everyone else knows the cues. If you don't want the groom to see you before the wedding, we can still make adjustments for that.
Once the ceremony begins, relax and take in the moment. The script is written. The details are attended to. It is your day!
